Assignment 1: After listening to the first impressions pod cast and reviewing "Tips on Getting to Know Your Mentor" I gained a good bit of information on how to approach and impress a new boss or mentor. Both pieces stress maturity and promoting a good self image. The pod cast says " First impressions are usually made within the first ten seconds of meeting someone..." I believe this is completely true, so you should always dress appropriately for your setting as well as greeting people in a memorable way. What your mentor thinks about you can foresee opportunities granted to you. Throughout my internship I hope to understand what being a nurse is really like. I consider this to be an amazing opportunity because it gives me a chance to decide if this is something I want to do for the rest of my life before I start furthering my education. I'm very excited to see what this internship holds for me and what I can gain from it.

Assignment 2a: leadership In Russo's speech he emphasizes the word indifference and how we need to work together as a whole society to make change. I can not express how much agree with him, in high school everyone is afraid to act like the care because it is "not cool". I do not understand where we came up with this idea of caring being uncool, but I think it needs to change. Russo is a great example for people everywhere, more people to listen to his message and realize that caring and helping is a cool thing to do. In my mentorship I really hope to be able to make a difference even if it is just a small one in my own life. I am truly excited to learn everything I can and grow from the experience. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zarli7__Su8
Assignment 2b:leaderhip To help people you do not have to do anything huge just simply helping someone with school work can make a big difference in their life. Be kind!
Assignment 4: getting ready for your mentor
In my opinion this article was very informative. It gave tons of tips on how to succeed in my internship like ask question so I can be prepared, have a good attitude everyday, be professional, and also be very thankful for the opportunity. Also I thought it was very helpful that it included a lot about earning credit hours for school through an internship. The article gave me new tips on how to dress people in the office as well as how important it is to network in general. I think everyone should read this article before starting an internship or even their first professional job. Overall it was very helpful and will be a good thing to refer back to in the future.

Assignment 5: communication
when having conversations with different people you use different tones, words, and body language. This is completely natural since when you are around friends you tend to be more relaxed than when you are with your boss. During conversations with your boss or people you work with you're more than likely talking about work related topics, and you are using professional mature language. In comparison when you're hanging out with your friends having casual conversation you're not really thinking much about impressing them you are just having fun. I think it is completely normal to talk to friends completely different than how you would talk to a boss, everyone does it just because of the comfort level you have with different individuals.
When I first started my internship I expected the conversations to be strictly medical, but to my surprise they have been a little casual. All the nurses and the doctor are really nice ladies and it easy to have a conversation with them about anything. The main topic of our conversations are still medical because I don't expect to have the same conversations with them as I would with my friends but overall its very easy to talk to them. Even though it is super fun to talk to them I still try to act as mature and professional as possible because of the setting I'm in. On the contrary I do not want to seem uninviting and like I'm unhappy talking with them so I still try to joke around some. I think everything depends on the people you are with, just because you're with your boss doesn't mean you need to be a stiff bored. All in all people like people who are easy to talk to so just make your self available and try to engage in conversations as much as possible.

Assignment 6: work ethics
The work ethics assignment was a test where we rate our selves on how well we perform in a professional setting. I was asked to answer about 50 questions that described my personality in the work place. The questions ranged from dependability to positivity regarding my attitude. I try to show up every day ten minutes early with a smile on my face, as well as help in the office in any way possible so I answer the survey questions pretty positively. overall in very pleased with my scores. I got a 6.5 out of seven in interpersonal skills, a 6.56 out of seven in initiative and a 6.86 out of seven in dependability. I would agree with these score.
Throughout my internship I have learned a lot. The most important thing I have learned is that there is a lot of waiting. You cannot show up everyday expecting something super huge and exciting, sometimes you will just be doing inventory or in my case waiting for a patient to arrive. It is extremely important to remember to act professional even when you are just waiting. You shouldn't take out your phone and start playing games, you should always be doing something productive. If I'm waiting for a patient I try to at least talk to the doctor or nurse and ask questions about their schooling and various medical questions. A job or internship might not be exactly what you expect but at the end of the day you are gaining valuable information and should be very thankful for the opportunity.

Assignment 7: Growing leaders
This article by Tim Elmore is summarizing the benefits of an internship and how internships should be viewed. He comments on how he was saddened by his friends comments on the students participating in his program. Elmore wants people to be extremely happy that the landed an internship and focus on the positives involved in it. He also goes into the qualities they look for when choosing interns; teachability, initiative, responsibility, and energy. The process of picking interns is pretty extent and they only want "gifted" students, so if you are chosen for one you should be extremely grateful and prideful. Also, you need to make a good impression. A few ways that I try to make a good impression are always smile and greet my mentor, speak loudly, and follow up when asking questions to make sure I understand what they are saying. Overall just act politely and make your mentor feel like you really are grateful to be there.

Annotation:
This source is a basic overview of the career of a pediatric nurse. The article goes into detail about difficulties of being a nurse, and the decline of People taking an interest in a nursing career. Also, the authors comment on the number of nurses who are deciding to take a different career path. In addition to that the article provides a chart giving percentages of working nurses, their education level, age group, average hours put in during a work week and so on.
Potential Quotes:
I think it would be interesting to use some of the graphs (pg.329 & 330) included in the article as sources. Also, I think the quotes from the survey done on a sample nursing staff are quite compelling. A few quotes from the survey are: “The work is really challenging;”(pg.328) “People go out of their way to help a new employee feel comfortable;” (pg.328) “Supervisors often criticize employees over minor things.” The Personal Growth Dimensions…”(pg.328).
Assessment:
I find this source to be creditable because it uses a good bit of statistics that evaluate the average number of nurses, and their day to day struggle. It also has details about levels of education needs to become a nurse, as well as an abundance of useable facts.
Reflection:
I could use the information from this article to learn more about the down side of a nursing career in order to make a better educated decision on my career choice.
assignment 9:
I choose the article titled "Perceived Nursing Work Environment of Acute Care Pediatric Nurses." to use as a source for my research paper. In my opinion, this article is very eye opening, though it does tend to focus more on the negative side of the profession. It shows how many people decide to go into nursing and then completely change their minds once they make it to the actual world of working. The article includes an overwhelming amount of charts and graphs to represent things like amount of schooling individuals had, the amount of time they stayed in the nursing field and so on. It also included quotes from nurses to strengthen the argument in the article. This could be an extremely helpful article to read when considering a career in nursing since it shows you all the pros and cons. It will also be helpful in my research paper because I can site the graphs and use the personal testimonies from the quoted nurses. overall this source will be very helpful and usable in many aspects for my upcoming paper.

assignment 10: internship update
Before starting my internship, I was under the impression that is would be a strictly business adventure. I thought it would go in a completely different direction that it did. I was pleasantly surprised with how my internship has actually gone. Everyone in the office I am at is extremely friendly, and willing to share all their knowledge with me. I’ve been able to be myself in every way while at my internship, and everyone is very easy to talk to. All the ladies at the office have made me feel at home, and like they enjoy having me there. I was surprised on how laid back everyone was. It’s almost like they are all just friends hanging out, which they are but they still run a very professional practice. Not every day is crazy busy and exciting, there is a lot of time where I’m just asked to help shred old paper work, or address letters. Even though there tends to be quite a bit of quiet time, I still always feel like I’m doing something productive. All in all, my internship is by far my favorite part of this school year, and I feel like its preparing me a lot for my future career.

All in all, my internship is by far my favorite part of this school year, and I feel like its preparing me a lot for my future career.
My profile: At the end of my junior year I was introduced to the honors mentorship program, and was encouraged to apply. Extraordinarily enough I was one of the lucky ones chosen to be in this program out of hundreds of students that applied in Forsyth county. I was really excited to participate in this program because of the insight it would give me to my potential future career. Thankfully I was able to be placed in a pediatrics office. I really enjoy working with children because of their blissful attitudes and blindness to the world; they are mostly happy and bouncing off the walls (unless they have to get shots). It wasn’t until recently that I became intrigued in working in pediatrics, or the medical field for that matter. I’ve always enjoyed helping others and paying it forward, but my eyes have been opened to the lack of people willing to work with sick people in the past couple of years. Also, not only is there a lack of incoming employees in this field, there is a shortage of people willing to put in the all-day every day smiles, upbeat attitudes, and endless joking around to make the patient feel even the slightest bit better when they are not exactly doing great. I know me becoming a nurse won’t change the world, but maybe I can occasionally put a smile on a sick child’s face.
My mentorship: For my mentorship I was placed at One Family Pediatrics office. I am absolutely thrilled with my placement; everyone there always seems to be happy, and it’s just a great place to be. Laura-lee is the head nurse at the office, she is constantly running around doing a million things at once which completely amazes me. She is a great person to learn from, and even just to talk to. Going into my internship every week I never really know what to expect because there is always something new. Of course, I observe a well check or a sick visit every day, but there’s always a new child and family coming in with a whole new experience. The office itself is pretty small and quaint, but it is never quiet and someone is constantly doing something which is great for me because I like to be busy. All in all, One Family Pediatrics is a wonderful place; I’m so grateful to be able to learn from the lovely ladies there.
My Future: In the next year, I plan on attending college and getting a nursing degree. My mentorship is such an extraordinary thing to have in my back pocket since most high school students are not given the opportunity to participate in an internship, I think it really makes me stand out to colleges. Along with that I will have previous experience in the field I wish to work in. I’m so excited to further my education in nursing, and eventually be out there putting smiles on children’s faces.

assignment 12: essential question
What is it really like to develop a career in the nursing field?
What is it really like to develop a career in the nursing field?
- I selected this as my essential question, because my main goal was to find out what it really is like to be a nurse. At the beginning of this year I was eager to be a part of the everyday work life of a pediatric nurse, since I was not completely sure it was what I wanted for my profession.
- While finding the answer to my question I really hope to be educated more on the schooling aspect of nursing. I’m in the office with the burses every week so I have a good perception on how that part will be, but I would like to find out more about what specific classes I will be taking.
- Yes, I think this question overall compiles everything I wish to learn about nursing.
Assignment 13: A partner in your education
My goal for participating in my internship this year was to gain knowledge about my future career. I would consider this goal successfully met, the ladies at my internship are great teachers when it comes to what they do. They have always made sure to explain every step of what they are doing. I would defiantly consider them as a “partner in my education” because I view them all as one of my teachers. I have learned so much about my future career in these past few months. I was not expecting to be learning and involved in so much of the medical aspects of a pediatrics office. My perceived notion of an internship was you are there to help with a few things here and a few things there, but thankfully everyone in the office has taken this opportunity as serious as me. I’ve learned all about making and administering vaccines; as well as how much it cost the office to keep them in stock. In addition to that I have learned all about how to talk to patients, and explain everything to them in a way they understand while also reassuring the parents of the patient. At my internship, I know I’m there to learn, but I also want to help in any way I can, as soon as I arrive I make sure to ask if there is anything I can help with. A lot of the time there is paper work that needs to be sorted or little miscellaneous things that need to be straightened up around the office, so I make sure to get that taken care of. Also, when it’s a busy day there’s usually little time for anyone to stop seeing patients, but rooms still need to be cleaned and ready for new patients so I usually keep up with making sure the rooms are orderly and have everything they need. Overall, I have learned so much more than I thought I would at my internship, and I try to help in any way I can every day.

Assignment 15: Interview
1. When did you decide that nursing was the career for you?“I was 16 years old and my brother had to get his appendix removed. After watching all he went through I decided I wanted to become a nurse.
I have a similar response to Julie for this question, my grandfather was hospitalized for heart problems a few years ago and wasn’t given the best care he could have been given. After watching what he went through I decided to become a nurse.
2. Is/ was there a person in your life that inspired you to make this decision?“I would say my brother and his experience was my inspiration.”
Also, similar to Julies response my grandfather and his experience in a hospital inspired me.
3. Have you ever regretted your choice?“Not once have I ever regretted my career choice.”
Julies response to this question is admirable in my opinion. She works with sick children and scared parents on a daily basis which must be challenging at times, but she truly has great ethics and a caring heart.
4. Was the required education challenging for you?“Yes, the education process was probably the most challenging thing about being a nurse.”
The education process is the thing that makes me the most nervous about becoming a nurse, so even though Julies response didn’t reassure me she did give me some great advice about school.
5. Was it hard for you to find a job after graduation?“No, I actually was offered a job before I graduated.”
This was not shocking to me, nurses are one of the most needed people in the medical field so it did not surprise me when she said she had no trouble finding a job.
6. About how many interviews did you go on?“I only went on one interview.”
Julie only going on one interview may seem a little shocking to some people, but if you knew Julie and the one family pediatrics team it would make perfect sense.
7. What was the most memorable patient / day of work for you?“There is a little girl who is five years old, she’s been our patient for a while now and has really needed some help. She is in foster care because both her mom and dad are in prison. The team at one family pediatrics has been the one stable thing in her life, and we try to support her and care for her in any way we can. We provide her with things like school supplies and basic necessities; my heart really goes out to her.”
This story really warmed my heart. I have not yet had the pleasure of meeting this little girl, but I hope to be able to. The ladies working at one family are truly kind individuals who genuinely care about the little ones they see.
8. What’s the most challenging aspect of your job?“I would say dealing with the parents of the patients we see is the most challenging aspect of my job.”
After observing at one family for a little while I completely understand this response. Some of the parents can be a little hard to handle during visits.
9. If you did not become a nurse what other career path do you think you would have chosen?“It sounds like a weird choice, but I probably would have made a career in organizing offices and people’s homes if I didn’t become a nurse.”
Knowing Julie this was a reasonable response, she is always organizing supplies and making sure everything is stocked around the office.
10. What’s one piece of advice you would tell someone looking to become a nurse?“Study hard and be diligent, school was really tough for me but in the end it paid off.”
This may seem like generic advise to some people, but knowing that Julie wasn’t perfect in school and struggled a little calmed my nerves to some degree.

Assignment 16: written proposal draft
The main factor that is driving my research is fear of the unknown. I am the type of person that needs to know my exact plan, so I am very curious of other people experiences of becoming a nurse. Currently my essential question is “what is it really like to develop a career in the nursing field?” In my opinion graphs and personal testimonies add a great deal of credibility to any research, so I will probably include graphs, statistics about nursing, and quotes from the nurses I work with at my internship to support my research. For my real inquiry, I will most likely look back at my interview questions with nurse Julie, as well as include knowledge from every day conversations I have had with the ladies at one family.

“, the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) initiative was developed to address the quality of nursing care through emphasis on six competencies”
(pg.6)
I consider this source to be extremely reliable because of who the authors are. Martha Raile Alligood, one of the authors is a registered nurse with a PhD and the second author Jacqueline Fawcett is again a registered nurse with a PhD. Fawcett also a professor of nursing. In addition to the authors having creditable knowledge, this article was published on Galileo; a reputable online source. This academic article included many outside quotes from different people to strengthen its arguments and information. Overall, I fully trust all of the information published in this article.
I believe this article fits into my capstone project very well, in fact this might be the article I rely on the most. I hope to be an amazing nurse one day, and this article showed me that it is okay to become “friends” with your patients and show compassion. Although it does not talk about the day to day duties of a nurse, it provides insightful information on how to be a great nurse. It stresses respectfulness, empathy, and responsibility of nurses. In my opinion all future, and current nurses should read this article.

assignment 19: capstone update
My capstone project has been an extremely informative project so far. I have gathered an abundance of information about my future career, and established a broader knowledge of what is to be expected. Even though I already have a good bit of knowledge for this project, this week I will continue to search for more. I would like to find more personal quotes from retired or current nurses. I am the kind of person who learns from experience, so hearing about others experiences would be very beneficial for me. Also, I would like to find information on what it is like to work in a hospital versus in a private office. I have yet to decide if I want to work in a private office or in a hospital, so finding some information on how they are different could be helpful to me. Overall, this week I want to focus on gathering specific information.

Folami, Florence F. “Gender Inequality and Role-Strained among Male Nursing Students in Selected Nursing Institution, Lagos, Nigeria.” Journal of Education and Training Studies, June 2017, pp. 1–6
In this article written by Florence Folami, gender roles are analyzed. The author discusses how there is an inequality between male and female nurses. The world has been brain washed to believe that nursing is strictly a career meant for women, so men who want to become a nurse are scrutinized. The article further develops a point verifying that this is a real problem in our world. There is an abundance of valuable information in this article and a few useful quotes are; “Men make up 10% of the nursing workforce in the United Kingdom and 6.6% of the three million nursing professionals in the United States of America (Grady, Stewardson, & Hall, 2008).” (pg.215) and “the literature has shown that men have less influence within the nursing profession and have more difficulty successfully fulfilling the role or bringing their own ways of knowing and doing into accepted nursing practice” (pg.216). Personally, I find this source to be reliable because of the amount of information and statistics the author included to support his argument. Also, I found this article on Galileo under academic articles, which is a good place to find reputable sources. This article might not fit directly into my capstone, but I still found it interesting and want to include it in a small way. This article shows that there is some discrimination in the nursing world, and even though it might not apply to me directly, it could explain what it is really like to become a nurse for others.

Assignment 25: abstract
My name is Sarah Jane Black, I am a senior at North Forsyth high school and this year I took a major educational journey and participated in a great program. My purpose for participating in Honors Mentorship Program was to research and learn about to day to day chaotic life of a pediatric nurse. I was intrigued by the career and thought it could be the perfect fit for me, but was unsure of what the job really entailed. One thing I was for sure of was that I loved helping people, especially young children. Laraleigh and Taylor, two of the nurses at One Family Pediatrics made a major impact on me during my time there, they were amazing mentors and I couldn’t have asked for better teachers. I learned everything from charting to compassion and making “tiny humans” feel safe. This program was the most impactful thing I have done in my high school career and thoroughly prepared me for my next step in life. I feel sure that when I purse my career in nursing I will be one step ahead in the educational process. I would like to give a big thank you to everyone at One Family for making me feel so welcomed and sharing all of their knowledge with me.

Assignment 26: Mentorship reflection
Throughout the year I would say I gained a plethora of knowledge about a career in nursing. One Family Pediatrics helped me gain confidence in myself that I haven’t had in years. Going into my mentorship every week I made sure to pay close attention to how everything operated and asked plenty of questions when I was confused. Everyone in the office was more than happy to help me learn. They would all thoroughly explain what they were doing and why, as well as answered all my questions is detail. I am super thankful for them sharing all of their knowledge, I think it will put me one step ahead next year when I and trying to earn my nursing degree. I 100% think I have gained enough knowledge and experience to be well prepared to take the next step to become a pediatric nurse.
After participating in Honors Mentorship Program and shadowing nurses for a while I can say that a career in nursing is pretty much exactly what I expected. Everyone in the office wants and loves to help people, especially children. It is also somewhat of a playful environment since we are around little kids all day and its flat out just a happy place for the most part. If anything, these past few months have just made me more excited to become a nurse and work with babies for the rest of my life. I did not expect HMP to be this exciting for me, I can truly say I and extremely glad I participated in it.
If I were able to go back and do it all over again I would, just to be able to experience the madness again. I would highly recommend this to anyone who thinks they know what career they would like to study and just maybe need some more information about the day to day life of said career. Being a part of this program and keeping up with your schedule is slightly challenging, but if you manage your time and plan your schedule accordingly the year will fly by without any disasters. This class has been one of the most beneficial classes I have taken in my entire high school career and I think everyone should have the chance to gain the knowledge I did.
